Movie: Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams

Grbavica: The Land of My Dreams (2006) is a compelling film about the aftermath of the Bosnian war in the 1990s. Set it Grbavica, a quarter in Sarajevo that was held by Serbs fighting for Milosevic’s “Greater Serbia” and engaged in ethnic cleansing, this film is a story of what happens after the soldiers leave. Incredibly sad, but poignant, this movie leaves you pained, but amazed by human resilience and love in the face of dreadful circumstances. Five stars!

Alex Udvary, an Amazon reviewer, wrote: “Grbavica is not a flashy film. It seems to have been shot with lower quality camera equipment. But, that is besides the point. The film carries an emotional truth rarely seen in films, regardless of country of origin. No grand gestures or cheap cinematic devices are used in the film to stir our emotions. The film plays everything straight. We seems to be getting a small glimpse at this family trying to survive. That is a lot easier said than done. How many films can make everyday events interesting?”
